Design Trust for Public Space is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the future of public space in New York City. Our projects bring together city agencies, community groups and private sector experts to make a lasting impact – through design – on the way New Yorkers live, work and play. Native New Yorker Andrea Woodner founded the Design Trust in 1995 to bring design expertise and systems thinking to the public realm, when public space was often seen as an afterthought. Our current and upcoming projects include: Design Trust Tender: The restorative city, a call for projects dedicated to exploring how public space and the built environment can be used as a tool to advance health equity; Open edge, a resident-led process to design a new public space in Lillian Wald Homes and serve as a model for NYCHA across town; Neighborhood municipalities, working with NYC Small Business Services, we will provide local organizations (such as BID) and small businesses with the tools to recover as key community anchors; Go out NYC, a project aimed at increasing access to arts and culture in the city’s public spaces, in partnership with SITU and the Mellon Foundation; and Outdoors in New York, a multi-phased, coalition-led effort to define the future of open dining and al fresco dining for New York City. Summary of position

The Design Trust for Public Space is seeking a highly motivated, full-time Communications Manager to advance thought leadership and organizational reputation by unleashing the potential of New York City’s public spaces. A part-time position is possible for a qualified candidate.

The Communications Director plays a lead role in all communications, outreach and event planning, under the direction of the Executive Director. The Manager, in conjunction with the Executive Director, Program Director and Director of Development, is responsible for developing and implementing an effective overall communications, media and outreach strategy that raises awareness of the organization, projects, programs and policy recommendations. Sharing our passion for public space and our mission, the manager will also be responsible for planning and organizing events and programming for the media, supporters and the public.

Responsibilities include:

Communication strategy – Work with the Executive Director to develop and implement an effective organizational, media and outreach communication strategy, including long-term and short-term plans, campaigns, press briefings, talking points on the Design Trust, its projects and programs and project launches, the identification of new opportunities and media culture.

Brand image and identity Working closely with the Executive Director and Design Trust staff, oversees the branding and identity of the organization, ensuring a recognizable brand in all materials and public awareness and timely dissemination of information on the activities of Design Trust. Performs communications review and updates style guidelines, information materials, brochures, letterheads and all other communications templates.

Public relations – Serves as a liaison with the media, project partners and decision-makers, including developing and maintaining media contacts, raising awareness of major media, organizing media briefings for the Executive Director, the board of directors and staff, and serving as a press liaison at events. Leads the preparation and distribution of communications materials on organizational activities and updates to target audiences, including messaging through print and online materials for Design Trust; monitoring media coverage and an archive of press clippings; and maintain a database of communication providers (printers, video, production houses, agencies, designers).

Media development – Oversees all media held including website, blog, email newsletter and social media – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn. Actively updates our social media accounts to expand and engage a large audience of key stakeholders.

Website management – Create and implement the production of content for the Design Trust website, designtrust.org and all project specific websites, including photographic documentation of Design Trust activities. Seek to increase web traffic.

Special events – Work closely with the Program Director and Design Trust staff to plan, coordinate and execute special events, such as press announcements, including work plan development, organization and event management to ensure successful execution with all event consultants, vendors, communications, website management and messaging, media maintenance and contact database.

Documentation – Document each event through photographs and audiovisual coverage, including updating social media and web content for each event, collecting feedback and developing final reports to assess each major event. Create a library of photos and videos to provide the Development and Programs department with easy access to media for grant proposals and presentations.

Background, skills and qualifications required:

Bachelor’s degree and at least 3 to 5 years of experience in internal communication and / or in a public relations / marketing agency, experience in the non-profit, design and social services sectors preferred

Strong editorial media placement and native content creation skills

Experience in website management highly valued

Strategic and creative thinker with the ability to pull together and synthesize complex information into compelling messages for target audiences

Ability to work independently while being comfortable within a multidisciplinary team made up of various groups including staff, donors, community groups and government agencies

Interest and preferably experience in design and / or cultural industries and / or public policies, working with community organizations, non-profit organizations or public agencies

Excellent written and oral communication skills and organizational skills

Experience in coordinating events

Team spirit and development in a small office environment

Enthusiasm, sense of humor and positive attitude essential

Experience with Microsoft Office, Photoshop, InDesign, social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn)

Experience in content management platforms and contact database systems
